Somewhat unexpectedly, Carl Pierre, captain of the team and Matt McCall’s only recruit that looked set to finish his career as a Minuteman, entered the transfer portal yesterday.
Most people expected Carl to not be back next year (in his four years on campus he has already earned an undergraduate degree and a Masters), but I think the consensus was that he would be starting a professional basketball career overseas, not lacing them up for another team.
Carl will leave UMass 18th on the all-time points scored list with 1353, and second in both three pointers made and three point shooting percentage.
Although expected that he wouldn’t be here next year, it’s never a great thing when someone who has UMass in their nickname transfers, and it is somewhat of a blow for Matt McCall, who used the word loyalty, including personal loyalty to him, three times to describe Carl for digital Senior Day: https://twitter.com/umassbasketball/status/1368267635754893312?s=21
“One of the biggest words to describe Carl is 𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘺. He’s been loyal to UMass and to me. The trajectory of UMass Basketball has changed during these four years, and he’s a big reason why. I’ll always be indebted to Carl Pierre for his loyalty.”
Good luck to Carl wherever he lands, and hopefully he has a chance to play in the NCAA tournament next year!
